Eye on the prize

16/05/2008 10:09:00 AM

SUNDAY'S Queanbeyan Cup

promises to be the biggest in years

with local and international talent,

fabulous fashions and plenty of

entertainment.

Everyone is invited to the racing

day of the year.

They will join special guests

federal member for Eden-Monaro

Mike Kelly, state member Steve

Whan and former world champion

squash player Heather

McKay.

In addition to the bumper eight-

race card on Sunday, family entertainment

will include the mobile

petting zoo for the children, musical

entertainment and the always

popular fashions on the field

competition.

Kate Shelton of Benedict House

will judge the fashion on the day

with Erin Dean and last year's

winner Sue Jackson.

There will be plenty of great

prizes up for grabs.

The best dressed female and the

best dressed couple will win a trip

for two to Melbourne. The best

dressed male will win an overnight

stay at the Hyatt.

''We'll be looking for individual

style, and people who are able to

pull off a style that suits their

personality,'' Ms Shelton said.

''It's always a good excuse to

dress up when you go to the races,

you can be as elaborate as you

want and wear all the accessories.''

The

Karabar High School

marching band will perform

before race one, and later in the

day.

The national anthem will be

sung by the Queanbeyan West

Public School choir.

As for the action on the track,

QRacing CEO Paul Greentree said

picking a winner would be a

challenge.

''There's a few good Queanbeyan

horses in there,'' he said.

''Bossy Matilda's a great horse

and Deejay Brahms will be tough

to beat after it shocked everyone

in Canberra last Friday.''

But, he said New Zealand horse

Juerga could be the one to watch.

The Thunderbolt is the pick of

the races outside the Cup.

Gates open at 10.30am on

Sunday morning.
